Process/Phases

«From the idea to a product ready for manufacturing»

For each project, the process is the same, which assures a certain quality and consistency in the overall procedure.

Phase 1: Idea

The basic idea for a problem solution is based either on specific research or on the awareness of a practical problem that urgently needs to be addressed. If this requires a new technology, instrument or process, then an idea is born. Of course, good ideas happen every day – but only a few have what it takes to go on to the next steps.

Phase 2: Feasibility / patentability / patent application

The next thing to determine is whether the problem solution is technically feasible. As we examine this, we also research whether there are already patents that apply to this problem area. It is possible that another inventor has already had the same or a similar idea, and already applied for a patent.

It may also be that the degree of innovativeness of the invention is not high enough to merit patent application. An invention must meet certain requirements in order to be patentable.

Phase 3: Product development

In Phase 3, we develop a prototype, with a constant eye to technical feasibility and series manufacture. The prototype must have the intended characteristics and perform the intended functions, while being suitable for production. This phase lays the groundwork for the next, very important phase, the search for a partner. Production companies that can make prototypes as well as manufacture in quantity, and thereby bring great added value, are fundamental to the further success of the project.

Phase 4: Partner search

The choice of a partner that can help in prototype development as well as series production is of enormous importance.

SMTS AG can draw on an excellent network for this, including specialists with proven performance in mechanical and precision engineering, general and special plastics, and many more. The ideal partner company also already has suitable distribution channels, and can rapidly push marketing through its customer or distribution network, nationally or internationally.

Phase 5: Execution

A project is successful when the value of an invention or product can be leveraged with the help of a selected partner, through the negotiation of a licensing agreement.

Fairness and correctness are important from the beginning, because the business relationship between the licenser and licensee will usually last for many years, and should not be marked by conflicts. Since we negotiate comprehensive packages, the fact that we can draw on a broad wealth of experience is important.
